Prerequisite: previous search management course attendance (SMS, NASAR, ERI International, ERI, National SAR School, etc.) Presented by Hugh Dougher. This course will incorporate all the concepts taught in SMS, but from an application-not lecture, perspective. Through a series of multi-operational period exercises, this course will utilize case studies to explore, review, and reinforce the Search Management System (SMS) course principles. Search Management Systems (SMS) Practicum (8 hours, May 22, 2011) The SMS Practicum is an eight-hour seminar designed as an intensive review and update for SMS course graduates. The participants will have the opportunity to work several practical scenarios. The participant will learn important background information, its implications for search and rescue, how to establish a prevention program, search statistics, behavioral statistics, and how to plan a search for each subject type. Particular emphasis is placed on the newer research concerning Alzheimer’s, despondents, mentally retarded, psychotic, abducted children, cross-country skiers, and mountain bikers. Lost Person Behavior (16 hours, May 18-19, 2011) This presentation covers the latest information and research regarding the lost person behavioral profiles. Additionally, this workshop will cover special considerations in Child Abduction Incidents and the Dementia/Alzheimer’s wanderer searches. Discussions will start with the evaluation of the pre-planning and vulnerable assessments and moving into the managing of the Urban Incident from the initial Hasty Search through multiple operational periods. This will include comparing and contrasting the Urban/Suburban/Rural Interface with the Wilderness Search Processes. Urban Search – Managing Missing Person Searches in the Urban Environment (16 hours, May 16-17, 2011) This two day workshop will prepare command and general staff and search personnel for the specific tasks and special techniques needed for searching in the urban setting. Presented by Richard Smith, ERI International. Previous ICS training (I-100) recommended. This course includes practical (outdoor) exercises in search tactics. Although primarily intended for Team Leaders and Field Leaders, it is also valuable for new SAR Coordinators. This is a detailed look at SAR leadership, tactics, techniques, and procedures at the field level. Team Leaders Course (16 hours, May 16-17, 2011)
